On Monday 14th December, a Google authentication failure caused interruptions across its systems worldwide, affecting both home and business products that rely on Google’s infrastructure.
The failure was a result of an error in storage allocation to Google’s authentication system leaving business users without access to Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets or Google slides. In addition, home users were left unable to use products accessed via the Google Home mobile app, causing issues with products such as thermostats, indoor cameras and smoke alarms.

Aside from the temporary inconvenience, Google’s outage highlighted the discrepancy between business reliance on technology versus the developments in reliability, testing and quality of products.
Furthermore, companies will be reviewing their agreements with Google off the back of the outage to reduce the reliance on stacks that are out of the company’s control.
