Alphabet unit has reaffirmed its commitment to California with a promise of a $7bn spend on US office space and data centres in 2021. This is thought to create an extra 10,000 new jobs as part of a wider commitment to its home state of California.
Google’s commitment to the state is especially notable as California has recently been rocked by big name tech firms leaving Silicon Valley, due to the high cost of living and local taxes.
Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, a founding father of California’s tech homeland announced in 2020 that it would leave the state, relocating its HQ to Texas. Interestingly, Oracle announced a similar move between the two states.
